Level II Trauma ED

Central Maine Medical Center has long been a statewide leader in emergency services and trauma care.

traumaCMMC was the first hospital in Maine to establish a 24-hour-a-day Emergency Department in the early 1970s. During the mid-1990s the Medical Center developed a dedicated Trauma Program. CMMC is also the southern Maine base for LifeFlight of Maine, the state’s only medical helicopter service.

CMMC’s Trauma Program is verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level II Trauma Center. This verification indicates:

  • an around-the-clock commitment by the medical staff, including general and trauma surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologist and emergency room physicians
  • availability of a broad spectrum of physicians in other medical and surgical specialties
  • availability of specialized nursing, clinical support services, and rehabilitation services
  • integration and support of prehospital and critical care transport
  • strong working relationship with trauma system hospitals
  • leadership in trauma education
  • continuing education of trauma team members
  • commitment to ongoing quality improvement efforts.

CMMC’s Trauma Program features clinical protocols such as its Code 11 trauma team response that quickly marshals necessary resources for incoming trauma patients. A monthly trauma conference provides education and feedback to physicians and emergency medical service providers. The Central Maine Institute for Injury Prevention offers ongoing education on safety issues.
