Elective Clerkships
Central Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency offers 3rd year student Core Clerkships to the Boston University School of Medicine, University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, University of Vermont College of Medicine and Tufts University (MMC campus).
The following elective clerkships are available at CMMC (clerkships are only scheduled when they will not conflict with resident education) and are coordinated by the Family Medicine Residencyoffice. We will approve only rotations during which you will receive the most optimal education. We offer these rotations to students from US, Canadian and Off Shore Medical Schools, as long as the proper paperwork is provided
INTERNAL MEDICINE OR FAMILY MEDICINE (sub internship)
- 4 week clerkship
- hours: 6:30 am (pre-round) - 5:30 pm or later Monday - Friday
- 4 calls including 1 - 24 hour shift on weekend days
- responsible for patient care from admission to discharge
- write orders with physician co-signature
- didactic sessions as part of morning rounds; radiology review daily
- participate as a member of a team (attending, senior IM/FM resident, IM interns)
GI
- 2 week clerkship
- hours: 7:30 am - 5:30 pm Monday - Friday (or as negotiated with the GI group)
- no required call (discuss expectations of the GI group re: call)
- inpatient consults
- outpatient experience is not available
- procedures include endoscopy, upper and lower GI’s, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy
- surgery
- can attend noontime didactics a the FP Residency with attending approval
ORTHOPEDICS
- 4 week clerkship
- hours: 7/8 am to 5/6 pm Monday - Friday
- no required call
- surgery
- outpatient care
- casting/splinting
- fracture care
- can attend noontime didactics at the FM Residency with attending approval
- This is an off-campus rotation, own transportation is required
RADIOLOGY (1 student per quarter)
- 2 week clerkship
- hours: 7 am - 5 pm Monday - Friday
- no required call
- reading plain films, CT, MRI
- exposure to high tech radiologic procedures
- can attend noontime didactics a the FM Residency with attending approval
We offer other rotations on a case by case basis. These specialties can include: Infectious Disease, Cardiology, Emergency Medicine and Rural Family Medicine.
